Ionic Copper
Copper is classified as an essential mineral because copper deficiencies
can produce symptoms. If the body does not acquire a sufficient
amount of copper, hemoglobin production is decreased and copper
deficiency anemia can result.
Copper is usually found in foods containing iron and insufficient
amounts can lead to inefficient utilisation of iron and protein,
diarrhoea and stunted growth. The liver and brain contain the largest
amounts of copper in the human body with other organs containing
smaller amounts.
Various enzyme reactions require copper as a co-factor. The main
ones are super oxide dismutase, amine oxidase, elastin oxidase,
serotonin monoamine oxidase, dopamine betahydroxylase, para-hydroxyphenylpyruvate
dioxygenase, cytochrome oxidase, lysyl oxidase, fat desaturase,
cyclo oxygenase and tyrosinase.
