Vitamin B9 - Folinic Acid
Folacin is the generic term for folic acid and related substances
having the biochemical activity of folic acid. Folate derivatives
in the diet are cleaved by specific intestinal enzymes to monoglutanyl
folate for absorption. Most of this is reduced to tetrahydrofolate
in the intestinal wall by folate reductase. Tetrahydrofolate polyglutamates
are the functional coenzymes in tissues. These are methenyl, methylene
and methyl tetrahydrofolates and are all metabolically interconvertable.
Folinic Acid (N5-Formyl-Tetrahydro Folate) is a stable form of folate
readily converted to Methylene Tetra Folate and Methyl Tetrahydro
Folate bypassing the methyltransferase conversion of Tetrahydro
Folate to Methylene Tetrahydro Folate. Methyl Tetrahydro Folate
is necessary in DNA synthesis during cell division. It also donates
its methyl group to cobalamin (B12) to recycle homocysteine to methionine.
